distress or misfortunes of another; pity; commiseration. Compassion is a mixed
passion, compounded of love and sorrow; at least some portion of love generally
attends the pain or regret, or is excited by it. Extreme distress of an enemy
even changes enmity into at least temporary affection.

Definition: I love how the 1828 definition says that it’s a mixed passion of love
and sorrow, and I think that’s true. You feel sorrow for the person, but at the
same time, you feel love towards them so you want to help them. :)
